5 Valuable Lessons I Learned Running an Online T-Shirt Business

Before being let go from a Print On Demand Apparel company I had the brilliant idea to start my own online graphic tees company called Shirts Just For You. Brilliant turned into a massive failure. I shut it down but only after clawing and scraping trying to make it work.
So my brilliant idea was not so brilliant. Now that I have come to terms with this failure let me explain the 5 core lessons I learned about running an online t-shirt business.  It didn’t work for me but maybe these lessons will help you succeed in your own online t-shirt business.

Core Lesson 1 – I Am Not A Designer

I created a few designs myself that I thought were freaking fantastic. Were they? That is to be determined but not by me. If you are not a designer. You can go on Fiverr or 99Designs and get some designs created. There are also companies like 365 Shirt Designs that offer massive discounts for a plethora of general designs you can then modify them.

Core Lesson 2- Print On Demand Integration with Website.

Most Print on Demand companies these days are integrating with specific platforms but before you decide where you are going to sell figure out what integrations can happen if they can happen on your preferred platform.
Here are some Print on Demand Platforms you can take a look at. My personal favorite that just kept getting better for me was Scalable Press. In my opinion, though do not limit yourself to just 1 POD company.

Core Lesson 3- Time Invested To Manage Business

How much time you invest in managing your business is up to you. Most of my time was spent trying to figure out new designs. My advice is to find a 1 or 2 great designs and figure out how to market those to the right audience.

Core Lesson 4- Community

When I first started working on my side hustles to generate extra cash I tried doing it Solo. I sat behind my computer or on my phone trying to push whatever it was I was selling to the general public. I cared more about making money than what they needed. However, after many hard lessons, I discovered that there are communities of people who were trying to do the same thing I was doing and they were all there to help each other succeed.

Core Lesson 5- Look For Trends

Last but not least don’t design just to design. Find a trend and ride that wave. There are a ton of places to sell your Merch but if you want help with Trends check out Merch Titans. They have a service designed around it and its designed to help you succeed.
Most importantly if running an online t-shirt business is something you are passionate about just get started and learn as much as you can while you do it. It can be fun and it can be profitable.
