3 Powerful Ways Mentors Can Jumpstart Your Success
When my wife and I first brought our daughter home from the hospital I remember without thinking I began to teach her. Even though she didn’t understand anything, I knew I wanted to share all I had learned so that she wouldn’t make the same mistakes her mother and I made in our youth and some adult years.

Sharpen Your Mental Blade
In all honesty, even though my view is focused, my skills are enhanced and I am constantly able to sharpen my mental blade; My only regret is not joining one sooner. Get ready to light a match that will change your life and metaphorically speaking pour gasoline on that fire and light it. Let your dreams burn so hot that others can feel the heat.
Build Your Power Team Of Mentors
Now that you know and Understand Why Here is how you can build your power team of Mentors.
Your mental ax is your greatest tool. Your power team helps you protect that tool by holding you accountable. They also help you sharpen your mental ax by telling you how it is when you start to get off track.
Now, who do you want on your power team?
Let me break this down for you into 4 core areas that will translate into other areas of your life.
- Mental/Emotional Mentor
- Physical/Health Mentor
- Spiritual Mentor
- Financial Mentor
One of the greatest inventions ever made in history in my opinion is a key. The Key unlocks doors and opens doors. It’s simple, yet powerful all at the same time. It is the one who holds it that has the most control. My recommendation is to purchase 4 journals. Keep one for each of the 4 core areas of your life. They do not have to be big journals. I have a medium-sized red journal that I keep and it works great for when I am writing about my most important events that happen in my life.
Along with those journals get a lockbox that will fit each of those journals with a special key that you can keep around your neck or on your keychain as a reminder to always write in those journals
For each journal get them engraved with Mental Development, Physical Development, Spiritual Development, and Financial Development. Once a week write in each of these journals. Choose a day out the week to write in each one or write in them as you get inspired or as you learn from your mentor in that area. What you are going to find that as you continue to grow and develop in each of these 4 core areas you can look back and be continually reminded of the progress you are making from reading in each of these journals.
Finding Your Power Team
The hardest part or maybe even the easiest part depending on who you know or what your current situation is, is now finding each mentor for each area of your life. The very first thing you want to do is make a list of 25-50 people you admire or respect whether it be from your community, church, school, friends, family, and anyone else you can think of that influenced your life in one way or another. Then take this list and write next to their name either Mental Development, Physical Development, Spiritual Development, Financial Development.
Put that list away and mull over it for a few days and ponder about who you feel would best fit you to help you master your 4 core developmental focuses. Don’t hesitate to take a week maybe even two weeks thinking hard and long about who you want to ask to be part of your power team. They must be just as committed as you are to seeing you succeed. If for one second you think they could turn their back on you at any moment cross them off the list and move on. If there is one thing that you do not need in your life it is those that are constantly pulling you down and trying to keep you at the same level they are on maybe even lower. Don’t heed their advice. If they are comfortable where they are at let them stay there and sulk. Choose your mentors carefully and wisely. This way you ensure that your mental ax stays nice and sharp and keeps your momentum going to build the life that you want to build and can build.
How do I ask someone to be on my power Team
This sounds simpler than it is but it can be daunting especially since you may be doing this for the first time. The best way to do this is to be straightforward with whoever you are asking. Tell them exactly what you are looking for and what you want to accomplish and why you want to accomplish it. When you can offer some form of compensation that would be their time and by all means make sure that they know that if they need help with anything or support with something in their area that you can help in making sure to jump right in and offer to help them as well. This is about building a mutually beneficial relationship that can be synergistic where there is more give than take and you can soak up and apply as much as you can from their mentor-ship. Don’t always expect to get a yes and that is perfectly okay just keep asking sincerely until you find 4 power players for your team.
Utilizing Your Power Team
You have done all this work to build your power team. Now what? Now you have to utilize your power team and harness their knowledge and apply it to your own life. To do that, that means being in constant communication with your team. Depending on how you want to structure it you can either meet with these teammates alone or together. My recommendation is to do it individually so you can focus on one core area to build upon without getting yourself overwhelmed.
